Was That Fay?
Music has always been my companion. Even when I was an art student at OCAD University.
I was a sculpture major and a conceptual-art-loving 20 year old - on my way to becoming an art teacher… or so I thought… but music was always there. I’d hear music everywhere - shoes on the sidewalk playing a beat, or voices like bells ringing off the walls in the hallways at school.
On Tuesday nights I would grab my sketch pad and go to The Reservoir Lounge on Wellington street in Toronto to see Tyler Yarema. I’d pay the $5 cover, treat myself to an amaretto sour and sit in the corner sketching the band as they played their hearts out.
I absolutely LOVED being there - I was in a meditative state, sketching wildly and trying my best to capture the movements of the players - as they performed like one well-oiled jazz-machine. I felt like I was home.
Looking back now, it’s clear that FAY has always been around. She was listening from behind those artist’s eyes, taking notes and brewing up song ideas. She dreamed of being on that stage. Who knew it would take her almost 20 more years to emerge into the public and take the mic herself.
But she made it!
She’s here. Except now she’s on stage with Dizzy, at Reid’s Distillery, and she’s drinking gin.
Xoxo Fay
