I’m Alright
And borrowing from others songs….
Fay came into the studio one day singing this: “… I’m Alright, I’m Okay. What’s the point in you asking me that anyway..”. I remember us going to the piano and experimenting with keys/feel/tempo like we normally do. Instantly, a strong horn presence (trumpet/trombone/saxes) started to reveal itself.
I remember saying AFTER THE LOVE IS GONE type horn textures would work for the verse responses we were hearing.
Then we were thinking THEME FROM A SUMMER PLACE piano intro.
And then PERRY MASON horns for the horn soli section (but not as Perry Mason as the horn parts we wrote for our single, HOOKED).
And then maybe a Pips (as in Gladys Night and the) type vocal response for the out vamp.
It didn’t take too long for the track to settle in to a place that felt like home. We would later record it live off the floor with a rhythm section and then add horns and strings in subsequent recording sessions.
Well the Pips didn’t make it on the record but sometimes appear live with us. ;) Also, we don’t normally have a live horn section with us but so ingrained are the I’m Alright horn parts, we can’t help but sing them every time we perform.
